  Etymology of specific epithet
The specific name, pugnax, is Latin for belligerent, aggressive, pugnacious. Mature males defend their territory very aggressively during breeding season. This species is locally called ‘Kenka-Moroko’ (kenka means fighting in Japanese) (Niwa, 1967). Thus, the name alludes to the behavioral characteristics of this species.
